It seems that IF the grounding wire in the fuel hose is intact then simply keeping the nozzle in firm contact with the can would stop the spark. The problem is that this is difficult to do, especially when withdrawing the nozzle as the can fills.

What about plastic gasoline containers? Certain types of plastic can also build up a static charge. Beware!
